![]() ![]() So that is why I want a new (low profile) keyboard with all the bits and bobs of the new age. I do have an ancient Yamaha 9000 Pro (with floppy disk) which is much better quality-wise than my M-audio device (the 9000 pro even has midi In/Out) but it's REALLY bulky and there is no way I could get it to fit under my desk, even if I tried (even for on top of the desk it's too big, so I have it on a stand behind me, which is a massive act to work with when you are in the flow of composing/making music). The A series doesn't have great feeling keys (from what I heard) so the S series seems like the logical (yet pricey) upgrade. I grew up playing piano and am pretty sick of my "M-Audio Keystation Mini 32" which has trash keys (what I would assume most check keyboards would have) and I finally want a decent upgrade. What is really important to me, though, is the feeling and quality of the keys. To the left are transport controls and further left still, two configurable touch strips that handle mod wheel and pitch bend, as well as octave buttons. The deep integration with NI software is one of the reasons I am interested in the NI keyboard. Not that they won’t work for garageband, but that there’s a lot of features for the software they’re designed for. It’s also worth noting that these are both specific to software launch key to Ableton Live and A88/S88 to Native Instruments plugins. In the new version of the software this extends to compatible third-party instruments as well. Use the Komplete Kontrol S88s two high-resolution color screens and purpose-built browser to navigate through NIs tag-based preset system, remap parts of the. I’d consider something like the Novation Lauchkey, or the A88. For any loaded instrument you get a number of pages of controls, pre-mapped to the touch-sensitive knobs for tweaking. This talks directly to the software and all your visual feedback is from the nine displays across the centre. You navigate using the section to the right and this has Browse, Preset, arrow and other keys as well as a jog dial. The idea of course is that you can do many things without reference to the computer. You connect to your Mac or PC over USB (power is supplied separately) and use the Komplete Kontrol software. Native Instruments' Komplete Kontrol series of keyboard controllers has been around for nearly five years now, having proven very popular notably amongst studio musicians who work with NI's Komplete series of virtual instruments. There’s no sustain pedal included and although these are inexpensive to add yourself, it’s a bit of a shame on what is really a player’s keyboard. Published August 2019 The S88 MkII offers a high-quality weighted keyboard and even tighter computer integration. It’s functionally identical to the other models in the series, with MIDI I/O on the rear panel as well as inputs for expression and sustain pedals. Although I have many keyboards, the one I play on when I’m really playing piano is a digital stage piano, because of how great it feels. Those keys in this instance come from Fatar (as do the others in the series, though only semi-weighted), whose keybeds are well known in the industry for being very playable. I should qualify that last statement by saying that enjoying synth-action keys doesn’t make someone less than serious, but rather that there are some sounds-the most obvious example being acoustic piano-that are just so much more expressive when played with full-sized, weighted, hammer action keys. Joining the 25, 49 and 61 key models is an 88-key weighted beast that’s designed for the more serious player. I thought I would update my review from a couple of weeks ago regarding the 2 star review that I gave the new KK S61 Mk2. This is an addition for my S88 which I just love. ![]() ![]() Along with the release of the Komplete Kontrol software version 1.5 that brings a bunch of important new features to the platform (like expanding it to other VSTs), NI has released the biggest and you might reasonably assume final model in its “S” keyboard series.
